Video Production Manchester: A Brief History
Manchester's Film Heritage
Manchester has a rich and storied history in film and video production that spans over a century. One of the most notable early studios was the Mancunian Film Corporation, founded in 1924. They produced a number of feature films and helped establish Manchester as a creative hub outside of London.
The BBC and Granada
The arrival of Granada Television in 1956 transformed Manchester's media landscape. Based at the iconic Granada Studios on Quay Street, it became one of the UK's most respected broadcasters, producing legendary programmes including Coronation Street, World in Action, and Brideshead Revisited.
MediaCityUK
The development of MediaCityUK in Salford Quays marked a new chapter. When the BBC relocated significant operations from London in 2011, it brought thousands of media professionals to Greater Manchester. Today, MediaCityUK is home to BBC Sport, CBBC, CBeebies, ITV Granada, and numerous independent production companies.
The Modern Creative Scene
Manchester's video production scene today is vibrant and diverse. From music video production in the Northern Quarter to corporate film studios in Ancoats, the city offers world-class facilities and talent at competitive rates compared to London.
The combination of affordable studio space, a deep talent pool, excellent transport links, and a collaborative creative community makes Manchester one of the best cities in the UK for video production.
